View Full Version : ROK Espresso Maker Review and Concerns

There's talk of Alloy Chaffing with the levers, Metal Oxide/Corrosion getting into your coffee, and that the Plastic Water Chamber is NOT BPA Free which in all is not great news for this ROK Espresso Maker, but it's a bit late after all the latest improvements before it's re-launch; it's true to say that it gives a totally hands-on approach to making an 'espresso' anywhere. Grind your coffee beans, fill the basket, tamp, and lock the portafilter in place, and pour in the hot water to the top chamber, and you're off! The above findings may change your mind!

Manual, non-electric espresso maker
Made from polished, high quality aluminium
Strengthened alloy formulation
Creates cafe style coffee in the comfort of your own home
Formally known as Presso Espresso Coffee Maker

Health Risks:

1. ROK, have confirmed that the Plastic Water Chamber has BPA in it's material, and due to hot water being used in this chamber, BPA could leach into the water and will affect your health!

2. Credit to Brechett (http://artofolivegreen.wordpress.com/author/brechett/) for the following findings here:
"Construction
Generally, the construction of the ROK is solid and ingenious. But its finish will not stay perfect. This is because steam rises from the chamber where you pour the boiling water. The steam acts on the joint where the aluminum wings are pinned by a bolt that is probably stainless steel, causing galvanic corrosion (http://aluminumsurface.blogspot.com/2009/04/corrosion-between-anodized-aluminum-and.html). http://artofolivegreen.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/img_2060.jpg?w=627&h=418The finish of the ROK is highly polished and probably anodized, so where this corrosion happens the anodized layer cracks and aluminum oxidation (rust) happens in the cracks. It won’t affect its function but as you can see, aesthetic fetishists will be bummed.
Another flaw, this one more serious, is the choice of ridiculous rubber feet that stick to the bottom. As a metalworker, I can tell you that anodized aluminum is an amazing material. Almost anything (paint, adhesives etc.) will stick to it, much better than it would to raw aluminum. After anodizing and painting aluminum, it can be sealed to prevent anything sticking. So if the base were aluminum, I would have anodized it, stuck the feet on, then sealed it."
Finally,

With ROK's major improvements complete, why oh why have they NOT Done prior testing before it's launch; in particular into possible Health concerns as mentioned above? Alloy, is a poor conductor of heat, too!

the ROK Espresso Maker's Plastic Water Chamber has BPA in it's material; ROK's PR have confirmed this!

Have also read a user review (linked in the above post) that the ROK Espresso Maker is chaffing quickly with the wear and tear (see Galvanic corrosion around the joint in photo) of the alloy levers, and that metal oxide/rust could well make it's way into the water/coffee chamber; NOT GOOD NEWS!

I’ve just had it confirmed from ROK, that there IS BPA (bisphenol A) in
the plastic water chamber, and to me that is no good where hot water and plastic is
concerned in the process of making an ‘espresso’ using the ROK!
